Parish of Leatherhead - Weller family

A Voice from the Past - from the September 2013 parish magazine

The Friends of the Parish Church were surprised to receive a membership application from Esme Weller, who lives in Horsham. Esme had been given an old copy of the Church magazine and wrote to tell us of her family’s past connections with the Church.

Her grandfather, Arthur Dean, was Captain of the Bellringers and his name is recorded on several “peal boards” in the ringing chamber. Esme’s mother, Ethel Thomas, was born in Church Walk and helped to run a Guild in the Church Hall for young girls, and her father was a sidesman; they are both now buried in the Churchyard.

Esme was baptised, confirmed, became a Sunday School teacher, and was married in the Parish Church. Her late husband was head boy in the choir and a server in his youth. Mrs Weller is no longer able to drive and tend the family grave so is particularly appreciative of the work the Friends of the Church do to help with the upkeep of the Churchyard.
