Parish of Leatherhead : Planning your Wedding music

If you are planning to get married at Leatherhead's Parish Church of St Mary & St Nicholas and you’re not sure about what music to have for your wedding, here are some Top Tips!

We want to make your wedding at St Mary & St Nicholas as memorable as possible, and you can select to have whatever music you like, it is your day after all!

We have been happy to play the latest Coldplay or Robbie Williams hit song on the electric piano, or something classical on the organ; we are also able to provide a soloist (perhaps a trumpet player to play the voluntary, or a solo soprano). We would be delighted to help you choose suitable music for your special occasion.

Remember also that we have a robed choir of up to 17 members (depending on availability) which would always complement your service and help lead the hymn-singing. Please contact the Parish Office (01372 362544) for more details and fees.

It may help to divide the music for a typical church wedding into five sections:

1. Before the service 2. Entrance of the bride 3. Hymns 4. The signing of the register 5. The Wedding Couple come down the aisle.

1   Before the service ( music played as your guests arrive and are seated in the church )
This is normally played on the organ, though the organist is also an accomplished piano player should that be your preference. We would always recommend live music, but there is also the option of pre-recorded music played from a CD through our PA system.

Included in the repertoire are:
Selections from Handel’s Water Music and Fireworks Music
Various popular classics including Pachelbel’s Canon, JS Bach’s Air on a G string, and many others

2   Entrance of the bride
Traditionally, this is the Bridal March, i.e. the tune of Here comes the Bride (The Wedding March from Lohengrin by Wagner) but there are a number of other choices available as part of our repertoire. These are Trumpet tunes by Jeremiah Clarke or Henry Purcell. Unforgettable (Nat King Cole)
Arrival of the Queen of Sheba by Handel.

3   Hymns  - anything from one to four hymns in a service (but more usually 2 or 3). You can choose from our hymnbook Hymns Old and New.

Popular hymns from the book include, (in numerical order):-
26 All things bright and beautiful
32 Jerusalem
183 Sing Hosanna (Give me joy in my heart)
428 Love Divine, all loves excelling
465 Now Thank we all our God
543 Praise and thanksgiving
550 Praise my soul the King of Heaven

4   The signing of the register - Pieces are usually played on the organ, or if you have opted to have the choir they may sing during this time.

Pieces the choir have sung are:
Brother James’ Air
Jesu, Joy of man’s desiring
23rd Psalm setting by Howard Goodall (theme from the Vicar of Dibley)

Solo organ pieces (from the same list as Before the service)

5   The Wedding Couple come down the aisle - as you leave the church it is traditional to have the organ play a bright exciting piece (often the popular Wedding March by Felix Mendelssohn) but you could choose the Toccata from Symphonie No.4 by Widor (extremely popular) or one of the well known Trumpet tunes by Jeremiah Clarke or Henry Purcell.

We can also offer the services of a soloist to perform during the signing of the register – we have an excellent soprano with a varied repertoire. Also a solo trumpet which, along with the organ, can bring alive the entrance of the bride, especially with such pieces as the Trumpet Voluntary. Soloists are by arrangement and at an additional charge.

You can always discuss your requirements, initially by contacting the Parish Office on 01372 362544.
