Golden Wedding

Burton, Patricia, Mary, George and Una during their anniversary trip to New Zealand
They had one daughter, Mary who lived with them in Copthorne Road until she emigrated to New Zealand in the late fifties.

In 1978 George and Una celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a three month visit to New Zealand to see Mary and to meet her husband Burton and daughter Patricia for the first time.

Sadly Una passed away in 1983.

George wrote three poems, one of which he wrote for Una: On the Road

I know the way will not always be dappled
With sunlight, and the flowers of many a hue
Shall wither at the wayside as we pass by,
And the skies above may not be ever blue.

The road at first is steep, the going rough, dear,
But hand in hand we'll climb o'er every hill,
Until at last the track shall fin'lly level,
Still happy as the day we said "I will".

Through tears and storms and pain the trail shall lead us;
There will be times when puddles block our way,
But with our love and faith in God to guide us,
'Tis certain we shall find a brighter day.

And when our twilight years at last are dawning,
The flame of love shall burn as though still new,
Dear, I'll be glad when gazing down that highway,
That I trod the road through life alongside you.
