2014 AGM & talk 16th May

Friday 16 May: Our Annual General Meeting was followed by a most interesting talk from historian and battlefield guide Richard Hughes on the British Army in Northern Europe in WWI.

Concert at St Clement Dane's, 2nd March 2014

On 2 March we had a very enjoyable day in London for the Brandenburg Choral Festival. Our coach dropped us by St Clement Danes Church and most of us walked down to Two Temple Place to view the exhibition from the Museums of Cambridge.

The afternoon’s superb concert in the Church was by the City of Oxford Choir, conducted by Duncan Aspden, a former organ scholar of Canterbury Cathedral and Jesus College Cambridge. As we left the Church at 6 pm the bells rang out their “Oranges and Lemons” chimes, which really rounded off the day. The Brandenburg very generously donated half of the ticket price to the Friends of the Church plus the proceeds of the retiring collection and we were able to add about £400 to the funds.

The following weekend’s Quiz, created and delivered by Frank and Jane Haslam, was another resounding success, and the food from Café Rialto in Leatherhead High Street was highly praised. Many thanks also to Jackie Hampton and Jenny Macfarlane for co-ordinating the catering – and for completing all the washing-up. The event raised about £1,000 and the Chairman, Chris Evans, was able to hand over a cheque for this amount to the Rector to contribute towards the maintenance of the Churchyard.

The next date for your diary is Friday 16 May for the Annual General Meeting in the Parish Church Hall. Coffee and biscuits will be available from 7 pm with the AGM at 7.30 pm. At 8 pm, following the formal business, Richard Hughes, the former Head of History at St John’s School, will give a talk on the “WW1 Battlefields of Northern France”.

November 2013 Bridge Tea

Good news that the November Bridge Tea raised £1,000 for the Friends’ support of the maintenance of the fabric of the Church; many thanks to Fran Fleming and her team. We have more fund-raising events on the horizon for your new diaries – see above.

Friends Quiz 2013

Thanks to Frank Haslam (and Jane) for quiz mastering skills and to Jackie Hampton for coordinating the catering and to everyone else who helped, the Friends were able to add over £1,000 to the funds for the maintenance of the Church building and grounds. Thanks also to all of you for your continuing support. Chris Evans (Chairman) was delighted to be able to hand over a cheque for £1,000 to the Rector.

Our Annual General Meeting was on on Friday, 17 May 2013: see the report below. If you would like to be involved with the Friends’ Committee please contact our Chairman, Chris Evans, on L372169

Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church - Annual General Meeting 17 May, 2013

The Chairman was pleased to report that, thanks to the continued loyalty of members and other supporters, the Friends have once again raised a significant sum for the benefit of the Parish Church. The complete copy of the Chairman's Report is reproduced below.

Following the formalities of the AGM, Jay Bristow gave us an inspiring presentation on the work of the Leatherhead Youth Project. Many of us were shocked to hear some of the statistics, particular that one in five children in North Leatherhead is classified as living in poverty. In the current economic climate they find that securing funding is becoming increasingly difficult, but are determined to continue with the high level of support they provide for the young people of North Leatherhead and beyond. If you feel able to support them in any way, they would love to hear from you - 01372 383345.

The 2012 Annual General Meeting of the Friends

This took place at 8 pm on Friday 18 May in the Leatherhead Parish Church Hall. Following the formalities of the AGM, our guest speaker was the Assistant Curate of the Church, Reverend Kuhan Satkunanayagam, who gave an illustrated presentation on Churches and Charities in Sri Lanka.

Pictured is Chris Evans, Chairman of the Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church, presenting a cheque for £2,000 to the Rector, Graham Osborne, at the Autumn Market.

This has paid for the whole cost of restoration of the mediaeval Font, and a substantial proportion of the recently completed plasterwork in the Porch, South Aisle and Sanctuary.

Thanks to all those who helped to make the Girls' Night Out and Swapshop such a success; you are too numerous to mention, but you know who you are and the £800 addition to funds couldn't have happened without you - thank you. This will be a real boost to the contribution the Friends can make towards the current maintenance work on the Church.

However, we want to give a special mention to the "Boys", who helped behind the scenes on the night -Bernard, Chris, Frank, Geoff, Martin and Navin - to us you're all "Mr Wonderful"- thanks from all the "Girls", who had a really fun evening.

The next Friends' event will be the Bridge with Afternoon Tea on Wednesday, 9 November - further details from F Fleming (L375957).

Girls' Swapshop

Shopping and swapping - what more could we ask?
To organise something like that. What a task!
But somehow a team made that pipe dream come true.
Just how they did it, I haven't a clue.
Intrigued by the prospect, we came to the hall.
Bringing our offerings, we answered the call.
And, oh, what a sight there delighted our eyes.
The myriad of goodies, of all shapes and size.
So much to choose from, and so much to see.
Something appealing for you and for me.
Then after a mouth-watering meal, and some wine,
A devious quiz, just to test all our minds.
While the men, in the kitchen, were slaving away.
I guess that they must do these things every day!
So, thank you to everyone, in equal measures.
We all went home happily, clutching our treasures.
A super event. We enjoyed it so much.
A night with a truly feminine touch.

Many thanks to all of you who supported the Friends' Quiz Night. It was a hugely successful and enjoyable evening, raising around £850 towards maintenance of the Church and grounds. Special thanks to the Haslams and Hamptons for all their organisation and to the rest of the FLPC Team who helped.

The Friends' AGM begins at 7.30 pm on Friday, 13 May in the Parish Church Hall and this will be followed with a presentation by Goff Powell from the Leatherhead & District Local History Society on aspects of Old Leatherhead.

Look out for details of the Girls Night with Swap Shop on Friday, 24 June and, believe it or not, we already have a date booked for the popular Bridge with Afternoon Tea on Wednesday, 9 November.

If you've any ideas for events you'd like us to organise, please get in touch with the Chairman, Chris Evans on L 372169, and we'll see what we can do.

Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church

There was a record number of applications for tables this year for Bridge with Afternoon Tea. As usual, the exceptional teas and quality prizes and raffle were a big draw and we were delighted to be able to add over £1000 to the Friends' funds. This will be an invaluable contribution towards the maintenance of the fabric and grounds of the Church in these challenging financial times.

Many thanks to Fran Fleming and her team of volunteers – and to all those willing men who offered to man the car park and heave over 100 chairs – and even stayed to help with the sweeping-up.

The Chairman and Committee of the Friends thank you for your support of the 2010 events – particularly the Quiz, the French Evening and the Bridge Tea. Look out for more events in 2011 starting with the ever-popular Quiz on Saturday, 5 March. Seasons greetings from us all.

'Merci beaucoup' to all those who contributed to the hugely successfulVenez au Cabaret French Evening and the members who came along to enjoy themselves.

Thanks to the brilliant team who provided the delicious meal, those who decorated the Hall, and to all the artistes who provided the entertainment.

And to Martin Cole, our Grand Maître des Cérémonies, whose Maurice Chevalier impression [see left] will go down in Leatherhead's annals. We were delighted that the evening raised nearly £1,000 towards the maintenance of the Church and grounds.

Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church

Thank you to all the Friends who have supported events in the first half of 2010. This enabled us to pay for relaying the paving stones in front of the North Porch – something, which we feel will be readily appreciated by all parishioners and visitors to the Church!

This does, however, illustrate how important it is not just to maintain but to increase our annual fund raising, even in times when most people are having to think of ways of saving money. We have often referred in previous magazine articles to our wish to increase our membership but we are just as keen to be seen to be organising events which will prove attractive and most important of all enjoyable by individuals and families from all over Leatherhead and surrounding area.

As we all prepare to take a Summer break, we would welcome any ideas from readers of the Parish Magazine as to the kind of activity or event they would recommend the FLPC might consider for the rest of this year or in 2011. A note left in the Church for the Chairman or any member of the Committee or a telephone call, with your suggestions, would be much appreciated and will ensure that we are able to respond quickly to any requests for assistance from the PCC towards maintaining and enhancing for future generations the beautiful building we have inherited ... and don’t forget to note in your diaries that bookings will open in September for the Bridge Tea in the Parish Church Hall on Wednesday 10th November 2010.

Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church Bridge with Afternoon Tea - Wednesday, 14 October; this year the Friends' popular Bridge Tea was enjoyed by nearly 100 people and increased the amount available for projects for the maintenance of the Church and grounds by over £800. Thanks are due to the organising team for all their hard work.

The Friends of Leatherhead Parish - Money matters

The Friends are not always concerned with with raising money. Often we have the pleasure of helping the PCC decide how funds are spent or suggesting ways in which the fabric or the amenities of the Church can be improved. We were very pleased therefore to learn that one of the recommendations coming out of the recent structural survey was to install a modern lightning conductor on the Tower.

Surprisingly, there had been no such protection for many years. Maybe even ever! Happily the Friends had funds available and the new lightning conductor was swiftly installed, just in time for a hefty late summer storm rolling across the Surrey Hills ...

Meanwhile Frank Haslam and his small team of helpers continue with their task of clearing areas of the graveyard. Assistance of whatever kind and for however long is always welcomed. Please contact him on 379341 if you would like to help or to find out more!

The Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church

The ancient Church of St Mary and St Nicholas, Leatherhead, dates from the 11th century. It is the oldest building in Leatherhead, with one of the largest churchyards in Surrey and consequential ongoing costs.

The Parish Church is appreciated in many ways, as a fine example of mediaeval architecture, as a quiet place for reflection and as a place of worship. It belongs to us all. The objective of the Friends is to raise funds for the maintenance of the fabric and grounds of the Church to ensure our beautiful building and its surroundings are preserved for future generations.

After last year's generous support for the restoration of the 18c Thomas Parker organ, we're looking for ways to raise funds for more exciting (and some not so exciting but nevertheless extremely important) projects. If you have any ideas for fundraising events, we'd love to hear from you. In the meantime, some dates for your 2008 diary are:

Saturday February 9: It's Quiz Time Again (Bookings - J Hampton on L 376640)
Saturday March 8: Game Shows for a Laugh - we can guarantee you an evening of great comedy entertainment (Details - J Hampton)
Friday May 16: Annual General Meeting in the Parish Church Hall (details later)
Saturday May 17: Coffee Morning and Plant Sale (more details later)
Thursday October 2: (yes, October) - Bridge with Afternoon Tea (more details later) J Robinson (L 376650)

Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church - Membership

Very many thanks to all of you for your continuing support. With your help the Friends have been able to contribute significantly to the maintenance of the fabric and surroundings of the Church and have been delighted to be associated with the restoration of the Thomas Parker organ.

Existing Friends should have received an invitation to renew their membership - if you know of anyone, family, friends or neighbours, who would like to receive details, please do give them one of the leaflets which are available in Church.
If you have a Collecting Box to be emptied, this may be given to the Hon Treasurer, F Haslam (L 379341)

At our 2007 AGM we welcomed Chris Evans as our new chairman.

We are grateful to retiring chairman Ron Presley OBE for all that he has done for us.

Apr 2007 in church - We had an exhibition on the progress on the restoration of our Thomas Parker Organ and at our 2007 AGM Dominic Gywnn, one of the restorers, gave an excellent talk about his work and the project.

In November 2007 this restoration project came to a glorious conclusion with an Inaugural Concert. Many Friends contributed to the project either individually or through their support of the Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church.

Through the Friends there is an on-line listing of those commemorated in the church and churchyard.
