Guide to named grave locations in Leatherhead Parish Churchyard
What this website provides
This is a listing of the names and dates on gravestones
and memorials of those believed to be buried or
commemorated in the church and churchyard of St Mary & St
Nicholas, the Parish Church of Leatherhead, Surrey, England. It
is not a complete record of burials there. Those
commemorated by plaques in the Garden of Remembrance were added
on 2nd January 2005.
Start with the Search page by entering the surname you seek (e.g. Everett). The site is searchable by name, year of birth, year of death.
All entries have a grave number. Some graves have inscriptions to more than one person.
When you have a grave number (e.g. Everett, Alan Doyle b1905 d1987 age 82, grave no 1112/1 in Section G) go to the 'map' link to find the section containing that grave number.
The 'map' provides a representation of the layout of the churchyard in sections A-H. Each section (apart from A, which is not arranged in rows) has a listing of its rows of graves, with the start and end graves numbered (and named to facilitate finding for those who visit). There are also photos of each section to help visitors. The map sections and the listing for that section are linked to each other.
Grave 1112/1 is in section G. Clicking on G reveals that number must be in row G12 (and as it happens, it is the first grave in that row, left to right). [Alan Doyle Everett was a well known local doctor who looked after Lord Beaverbrook, who lived locally at Cherkley Court.]
Some grave numbers have suffixes, e.g. 1112/1. These simply signify that new graves were created after the original grave numbering was established e.g. grave 1112/1 was created next to grave 1112.
Your search may reveal that the surname you seek is listed in more than one section. The year of birth and year of death, where known, may not always be part of the inscription but are included for ease of searching.

How good is the information?
It is based on records compiled over many years by
different people. As with any project of this kind it is best to
think of it as being (say) 95% correct - and 5% 'incorrect'
arising from:
- duplicate entries
- transcription errors over the years
- problems in reading inscriptions, some of which may now be lost
- data entry errors when compiling the database, e.g. dates
These known issues will be addressed but will take time. If you think you have spotted such cases, please let the editor know.
Acknowledgements
This website, provided by the Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church,
would not have been possible without the help of the Leatherhead
and Local District History Society, Linda Heath and
Alun Roberts in particular, and the parishioners and members of
the Society who over many years have diligently recorded the
names from gravestones. Arnold Bax was the first recorder in
1889; there was the Mystery Recorder 1952-54, whose identity
remains elusive; Stan Parkes in the 1980s and David & Linda
Heath the late 1990s and Sue Green in 2004. Alison Wright was one
of those who computerised their paper records. The records at
least to the early 1950s remain the property of the Leatherhead
and Local District History Society.
How you can help
The Friends of Leatherhead Parish Church
welcome new members and donations towards our aims
of 'assisting in the maintenance and improvement of the fabric
fixtures fittings and grounds of Leatherhead Parish Church
and to seek to ensure that the Church and its surroundings are
preserved in an acceptable local environment.' Please note that
the Friends cannot undertake to look after individual graves. We
do contribute towards the heavy cost of maintaining one of the
largest church graveyards in Surrey and working parties have
recently been organised to complete the recovery of the last
overgrown section and to meet an aim that every gravestone shall
be accessible. If you wish to take part, please contact Frank Haslam.
The Leatherhead and Local District History Society welcomes new members and information that researchers and family members may wish to provide on those listed in these pages.
If you wish to have a photograph of a headstone or further information on any inscriptions then you are very welcome to come to visit our lovely church (see the Parish website > Calendar for opening hours) and churchyard as we do not usually have the resources to provide such a service.
